Movement Intelligence (MI)

The main objective of the classes is to help you developing a physical relationship with your body. By doing so, you can learn more on how your body functions, expand your physical capacity and regain your freedom of movement.

On the long term, studying your body will enable you to understand what causes pain and how to reduce it, and prevent physical limitations and injuries. But most important - to established an embodied lifestyle that is integrated to your day to day activities and simply improve your life quality.

In each class, we will focus on different movement principles and will study it through different materials (contemporary dance, martial arts, contact improvisation, functional training etc.) We will learn solo materials and will work with a partner or with the whole group.

The four core principles of MI

Increase of Awareness

If the way you train contains only repetitive patterns that you do mindlessly, you might get some benefits but you are missing the most important ingredient - body awareness. Without increasing awareness there could not be a real change in the way you use your body. The MI classes are designed to help you increase your awareness to your body in stillness and more important, in motion.

Learning to fail

Failure and improvement go hand in hand. Humans learn movement by first failing at it. We did it as babies and we keep doing it as adults. Learning how to deal with failure in a positive manner is crucial point for long term success and improvement. In the MI classes we supply you with tools to understand failure and to become more and more independent in your learning process. At the end of the day, we know that you are your best teacher and we help you discover it.

Making it pleasurable

To keep you engaged in the practice, we make sure that it is not only ‘good’ for you but that you will actually enjoy it while doing it. Everybody wants a healthy capable body but no one wants to do some boring, repetitive training routine.

The MI classes are playful and in constant evolution and change. In the classes you will play partner games, group tasks individual problem solving tasks to keep you fresh and interested. We understand that your time is valuable for you and we will make sure that you feel alive in every second!

Moving away from your comfort zone

You need to be challenged to keep evolving. Constant success represents failure in continued learning. But comfort zone is an individual thing, some people need to be pushed out of their comfort zone and others need to learn how to rest...

In the MI classes, we design the difficultly level according to each individual participant and we make sure that you will learn to recognise the boundaries of your capacity and learn how to exit your comfort zone in a safe and productive manner.

Outi Sulopuisto - Finland

"In a nutshell, studying with Matan was not only fun and challenging for myself, but it also carries over to my work as a physiotherapist, which was great. Also, learning new stuff always illuminates how I have constructed my world this far, making the elusive obvious. This gave me the feeling of being less blind, which is satisfying."

Benjamin Klein - Germany

"I experienced Matan's teaching as an undogmatic and at the same time a methodical approach to a wide range of movement possibilities. I met Matan as a very open and curious person, always available for an exchange of experiences and opinions.

Amongst others, I have learnt to trust my curiosity, accept my limitations and allow different approaches. To work with Matan was challenging, inspiring and a great motivation to discover more."

Lisa Dowler - England

"I felt that Matan’s teaching was generous, clear and organised and it was very easy to continue to work with his ideas on my own.

Aside from supporting my evolving movement practice, Matan's teaching is a creative, exciting and fun practice in and of itself and I look forward to the next time!"

Lukas Teml - Austria

"The way Matan approaches movement is quite different from a regular fitness program. It was great to learn so many different aspects of movement like groundwork, breathing, playfulness, improvising...

I could really implement the teaching into my day to day life. I think the Embodied Living course is great for preventing injuries by paying more attention to your body and having more skills to deal with day to day situations."

Chris Ruffolo - USA

"My first encounter with Matan's work was via his YouTube channel. A quick search revealed an intriguing online library that focused on movement breakdowns instead of impressivism. Here was a man I could learn from, in an un-intimidating way.

After participating in his seminar in San Francisco in 2018 I can say that the best teachers are the ones that lift the veil between themselves and their students. This man recognises we are one in the same. My favourite workshop of the year."

Vincent E. Jonsson - Sweden

"Studying with Matan helped me to understand how to connect information from different disciplines and how to structure better my own work and practice.

One of the concepts he shared with me that help me the most was the ‘Why - How - What’ hierarchy. It helped me to make things more tangible, more complex and in the same time more simple!"
